Married: Mai Mai + Martyn
Mai Mai was my first paid-for wedding dress commission. She got in touch via a friend of a friend, and as luck would have it is an absolute sweetheart! Plus she only lives 5 minutes away from me – the perfect client!
Mai Mai had tried on lots of different dresses in wedding dress shops, and had been left feeling uninspired. She had an idea of the sort of dress shape and neckline she wanted her dress to have, and from there we worked together to design all the details to make her perfect dress.
Mai Mai’s dress had a plunging V neckline and was lightly gathered at the bust. The dress clung around her waist and hips and flared out just below the knee to create a curvy silhouette. The back lining scooped out to the waist, leaving the back as sheer lace. A silver ribbon tied at the back waist and a puddle train added oomph!
Mai Mai picked out a delicate guipure floral ivory lace, which we lined with a pale silver crepe backed satin. The effect of the silver lightly shimmering through the lace was gorgeous! I loaned Mai Mai a vintage brooch which served as her something borrowed and something old, sewed in some blue satin to the lining for her something blue, and the dress itself was her something new. Old, new, borrowed and blue sorted in one dress – result!
During the months we worked on the dress together Mai Mai and I became close, and I was touched that she and Martyn invited my husband James and I along to their wedding reception at the magnificent Kelham Island Museum. The reception was amazing – loads of quirky industrial vintage details styled by Hansley Beard and amazing floral wizardry by Swallows and Damsons. Add in a cocktail bar, a ceilidh, great buffet food and a mountain of cakes – all making for a fantastic do! Seeing Mai Mai looking so beautiful in her dress and so proud to introduce me as its maker made me feel amazing!
Some feedback from Mai Mai:
“I couldn’t have made a better decision to have the very lovely Kate Beaumont help design and make my dress. She was patient when I wasn’t too sure what I wanted right at the beginning, and listened and made suggestions to help me achieve my dream dress. Kate made the potentially daunting process a real joy, and the outcome of our enjoyable fitting sessions in her studio was just what I had wished for – if not better!
I’m already missing the catch ups over tea and the excitement of getting to the finished product. Thank you so so much Kate!”
Thanks for trusting in me to make your dream dress Mai Mai!
