Frequently Asked Questions

everything you need to know about Kate Beaumont wedding gowns...

  • Dresses from the collection range from £1,200 to £2,950 - slip dresses are at the lower end of this range, and the majority of gowns are priced between £2,200 and £2,700. All are made here in the studio in Sheffield from finest quality silks and French and English laces.

Our dresses are made to order in your nearest standard dress size and can be tailored to your body during the fitting process, if you decide to use our alterations service.

  • Alterations take place during the fitting process and are priced on an individual basis. As a guide, they range between £75 and £200.

Hem length alterations are not chargeable, they are included in the dress price as standard.

Don’t forget to bring your wedding underwear and shoes to every fitting!

  • Once you’ve been in to try on our designs, we can always talk through possibilities for combining elements of different dresses in order to create something that’s perfect for you. Dresses can be changed almost endlessly, but the more changes you make to a design, the greater the cost to you, as we generally charge per change. Some changes are not chargeable – if there’s no additional fabric or time cost to pass on we are happy to make changes for free.

  • With all our appointment options you get the whole studio to yourself, and the full attention of one of our friendly team. The studio is a very laid-back space – appointments aren’t rushed and there’ll be no high-pressure selling. All our appointments can be booked online, and booking fees are redeemable against a purchase made on the day.

A note on punctuality: Appointments often run back-to-back (especially on Saturdays), so please do try to arrive on time. There’s no waiting area in the studio, so if you’re early please pop to a cafe nearby until its time for your appointment. If you arrive late, we will not be able to extend your appointment if another bride is due directly after you.

  • The studio sample gowns are a size 12. Obviously the samples rarely fit anyone perfectly, but we can pull them in when too big, and leave backs unbuttoned when too small, so that smaller and larger brides can still get a good idea of how a dress will look when made in their size. We have recently made up new samples of some of our most loved designs in a size 18, which are now available to try on in the studio. For more details on which styles are now sampled in a size 18, see our Curve Look Book blog post.

  • We have a selection of hair accessories, jewellery, veils, capes-veils and belts in the studio, all of which can be tried on with gowns and made-to-order.

We stock a curated selection of bridal accessories and jewellery from some of our favourite makers – Beth Pegler, Blue Meadow, Cathy Sutherland, Debbie Carlisle, Eden b, Jennie Gill and Mikaela Lyons.

All pieces can be viewed and purchased in our online Store, and are available to view and try on in the studio.

If you’ve purchased your dress elsewhere you are still very welcome to buy your accessories with us - you can make an Accessories Appointment here

  • It’s advisable to order your dress as early as you’re comfortable with. We are usually working on each bride’s dress over a six-month period, but we’d recommend you book well in advance of that six-month timeframe - about a year in advance of the wedding seems to be most people’s sweet spot. That said, we will always try to fit in brides whenever we can, so it is still worth enquiring about availability with a shorter timescale. We charge a rush fee of £200 for dresses ordered less than four months before the wedding date.

  • Cars can be parked right outside, either on the street meters or in the two car parks opposite the studio.

  • Friends and family are very welcome to come along with you, though we prefer brides to limit themselves to 2 guests at their first appointment. More guests can make our small studio seem crowded, and – as peoples opinions often differ – can sometimes leave the bride feeling a little confused and overwhelmed. That said, if you need to bring along more than 2 guests, please let us know in advance so we can do our best to accommodate you all.

  • Once commissioned, we will issue a contract and invoice for a 50% deposit, payable by bank transfer. The remaining 50% of the balance is payable midway between your booking and wedding date, and an invoice will be sent out to remind you a few days in advance of the due date.

  • Nude underwear is advised if possible. Many of our gowns are backless, and if you’re keen to opt for this look for your dress, we’d advise you try out a stick-on backless bra or low-back body as early as possible to ensure you feel secure wearing one (they’re not for everyone!). Dresses can be adapted at the back and sides to cover a strapless bra if required.

  • Measurements are usually taken at the point of booking. We’re always happy to take measurements after an initial appointment if you’re undecided on a dress and keep them on file. Likewise, if you’d would prefer to hold off having measurements taken until closer to the wedding that’s fine too, we can agree a date for measurements to be taken when you book.

Losing weight: Do let us know on booking if you’re planning to lose weight, as we can schedule your dress to be made over a shorter timeframe than usual, and arrange for your measurements to be taken as late as possible.

Once your measurements have been taken, your dress will be made to order in the most appropriate standard dress size. We can then tailor the dress to your body during the fittings process (if you choose our alterations service). Small changes can still be made to the fit when your dress is tacked together, but we do advise you to maintain consistent measurements during the fitting process.

  • We usually start working on your dress approximately six months before your wedding.

  • Dresses generally require a minimum of 3 fittings:

    · Toile: a mock-up of your dress to try on in your closest standard dress size, made in a cheaper fabric of a similar weight. If you choose our alterations service, or have chosen to make bespoke changes to a dress’s design, we will tailor the toile on your body to ensure the fit and cut is just right. Sometimes a second toile is necessary if there are lots of bespoke changes to be made. You need to have sourced appropriate wedding-day underwear for this fitting, as different solutions can alter how your gown fits.

    · Tacked-together dress: once we’re happy with the toile’s fit, we cut out and hand-tack your gown together to be tried on. Minor adjustments to fit can still be made at this stage (if you’ve chosen our alterations service) - remember your wedding underwear! - and this is when we decide on finished hemlines, so bringing along wedding shoes is a must.

    · Final collection: your finished dress is ready to be tried on and - once you’re happy with everything - taken away with you.

  • We are delighted to be able to offer consultations and fittings online, for brides who are unable to make it in to us for appointments. We can advise on the measurements we need, post out toiles to be tried on, and run fittings via video call. Obviously this method is more limited than in-person fittings would be, and we often advise that you work with a local dressmaker who is able to finish the hem length at the perfect point, and refine the fit if needed. Make an appointment for an online consultation here, or just send us an email with any questions.

  • Finished dresses are ready for collection four weeks before your wedding. Collecting earlier is totally fine too if agreed in advance - this can be written into your contract at the time of booking.

  • We prefer children not to attend if possible, as the studio is small and not set up with little people in mind - when children have come along in the past they’ve lost interest in the process fairly quickly to be honest! If you’re unable to arrange childcare though, do let us know…

  • Shoes need to be decided upon before your dress is cut out in the final fabric, so that we can ensure we leave enough fabric for the hem. Once you’ve chosen your shoes, please bring them along to every fitting to try on with your gown.

  • We can provide lace and silk swatches once you’ve ordered your gown to help you find accessories and bridesmaid dresses etc. Also, if you’re considering changing the colour of the silk on a dress, we can arrange to have small silk swatches send out directly from our fabric suppliers to help you make a final decision.

  • No, we exclusively make wedding dresses and do not make bridesmaid, prom or mother-of-the-bride dresses.

  • No, we work exclusively on our own designs and are unable to offer an alterations service on dresses bought elsewhere.

  • Please do not wear heavy make-up (especially lipstick), perfume or fake tan to your appointments, as it can transfer onto the dresses. Some make-up is fine – just not lots please!
