Coloured Wedding Gowns: for Alternative Brides

Look BookKate Beaumont

Every dress we make for a bride is made to order, meaning each one is made to the wearer’s exact specifications.

We make up a sample dress of each design to keep as a studio sample to be tried on (sometimes two versions in different sizes – as with our recent curve collection additions). These sample dresses serve as a base from which I can work with brides to tweak design details and create something perfect for them. We’re often changing necklines, sleeves, fabric options and colours, and sometimes combine design elements from two or more dresses into one.

Bridal colour palette

I’ve always created the collection dresses is a subtle bridal palette – silver, oyster, gold and bronze tones sit alongside the ivory and champagne shades – as I think that a gentle suggestion of colour can open people’s eyes to the options. Most people seem to assume all wedding dresses are white, whereas in fact we don’t have a single pure white dress in the studio.

Over the last ten years I’ve been making wedding dresses I tend to have a bride looking for bold colour every few years. I thought it was about time we made up versions of some of our gowns in non-traditional bridal colours, to show alternatives for brides seeking something alternative to that white-ivory-champagne palette.

Pink, blue, green and grey silk wedding dresses

We chose four silks that worked beautifully together, and also worked alongside the existing laces in the collection. Our Cosmos slip dress is now made up in a dusky pink silk, and the Thistle slip dress now comes in a striking powder blue tone. We styled Thistle with both our Astrantia lace gown and Lilac lace tops in our recent curve shoot.

We’ve remade Viola in a deep green silk, which looks incredible alongside those silver tones in the lace sleeves and belt. And Honeysuckle has been recreated in deepest graphite grey, with the lace V back switched for a matching silk version.

As always, we’re happy to make up any of our designs in any colour, and can even have laces dyed to match or complement silk shades if we can’t find the perfect shade off the peg.
